CLAIM:
“Marcus Rashford was spotted partying with Sancho in London following the 1-0 defeat to Bayern München.”
Background: A Facebook user who goes by the name Derek Katey Caesar and who, from all indications, appear to be a popular football pundit posted the claim on his Facebook page on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. This was barely 24 hours after Manchester United was defeated by Bayern München and sent packing from the UEFA Champions League.
As at the time of writing this report, the post had garnered 580 comments and 98 shares which indicates that the false assertion was fast spreading. Comments under the post shows that many people have already believed the false claim and some commentators on the post were already portraying Rashford and Sancho as insensitive and as needing discipline. It therefore makes it expedient that the claims be checked and the facts of the matter reported.
Verification: Using a Google Reverse Image Search, it was established that the pictures of Marcus Rashford and his team mate, Jadon Sancho used by the poster and portrayed as being images from a recent party in London were two old pictures of two different events that didn’t even take place in London.
The picture of Rashford used in the said post was first seen online in July 3, 2023 and was taken at a Lingerie party in Los Angeles, which was attended by Rashford. The party held barely a month after Rashford’s reported split with his childhood sweetheart, Lucia Loi.
Furthermore, Marcus Rashford was confirmed ill by Coach Erik Ten Hag and ruled out of the Tuesday UEFA Champions League match with Bayern Munchen, and as such, it was unlikely he would have gone partying same night.
The second picture in the post is Jadon Sancho’s picture with Nigerian Afro Hip-hop superstar, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido. The picture was taken in March 20, 2022 in Dubai, United Arab Emirate at the #DubaiExpo.
The two pictures depicting a time of partying by the two Manchester United stars are two unrelated pictures from old events and as such, is misleading.
Verdict: The claim that Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho went partying shortly after they were defeated by Bayern München is false.
