In July,, hours after the attack an account on X called ‘Europe Invasion’ posted that the suspect was ‘a Muslim immigrant’, a claim that was entirely false. The post was seen by close to 4 million users. Despite an official police statement that the suspect had been born in Cardiff, people continued to share this information online.

Later that day further misinformation was posted online, which named the attacker as someone called ‘Ali-Al-Shakati’, and claiming they were an asylum seeker who had come to the UK by boat last year. Again, this was an entirely false narrative.

This post on X, which is thought to have been one of the first to share this false story, gained traction and soon racked up 1.5 million views. By 10pm the same day posts containing the name had received over 6 million impressions. It’s been reported that the user of this viral post was arrested on suspicion of publishing written material to stir up racial hatred, and false communication. They’ve since been released on bail.

Even though the false details shared online weren’t true, they led to much higher engagement on posts that linked Southport with terms such as ‘muslim’, ‘islam’ and ‘asylum’.

Clarifying the misinformatio, a 17-year-old boy originally from Cardiff was arrested but due to him being under 18, Merseyside Police were initially unable to name him by law.

Amid all the speculation, a court lifted the requirement for the suspect’s anonymity and he was named as Axel Rudakubana – who was born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents.

Calling for deportation of immigrants in UK, an X user on August 12th, shared an image of a man and claimed a Pakistani immigrant broke into an English woman’s house, raped and tortured her for 5 hours.

“He poured bleach into her eyes and mouth and forced her to eat cat feces.

“This happened in Birmingham, the most Islamic city in the UK.

“Mass deportations are desperately needed, “the x user wrote.

According to the post, Dr Maalouf claimed it happened recently.

The post generated over 4.5m views and more than 17k as many users believed this story.
