Introduction

Video of the President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musliu Ayinde Akinsanya, “MC Oluomo” sharing cash to people at a rally surfaced online after the national convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday.

Nigerians, especially the opposition and some social media influencers, have criticized the APC and President Bola Tinubu for going ahead with the convention while failing to address the basic needs of the citizens, like the recent poor power supply and unending insecurity in many parts of the country.

Claim

Some of the X users, who distributed the video of MC Oluomo sharing cash, claimed that it was during the APC convention in Abuja.

Instablog  posted the video with a caption that reads, “MC Oluomo distributes cash to attendees at APC national convention in Abuja”.

Another X user, Rinu Oduala @SavyRinu, also posted the clip, claiming that it was MC Oluomo who gave N2,000 each to the people.

This video also appeared here, with the similar claim.

However, FACTWATCH Nigeria found it necessary to verify the video to know when it first appeared online.

Verification

A simple keyword search on Google shows that this clip first circulated on major social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube on 20 January.

Check where this video appeared in January here, here and here.

Some Facebook pages that posted the video then, said, without evidence, that MC Oluomo shared funds at a rally in Oshodi, Lagos State.

The Facebook pages added that M5,000 was given to the people.

Reporting the story, Legit, an online news website, stated that the video surfaced online days after MC Oluomo’s speech at the Zone 4 Zonal Delegates Conference organised by the union in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, on Wednesday,17 January.

Verdict

The claim that the clip of MC Oluomo giving money to people was from the recent APC convention in Abuja is MISLEADING.
