Introduction
In recent years, an Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has become very controversial as Nigerians link him to terrorist activities because of his utterances.
Security agencies have not yet indicted Gumi to have been involved in terrorism, but his comments to defend terrorists and bandits have made Nigerians presume that he is one of them.
Gumi is notorious for his consistent argument that armed bandits in Northern Nigeria should be granted blanket amnesty, similar to the treatment of Niger Delta militants in Nigeria’s South-south.
Due to his statements and proximity to bandits, the Department of State Services (DSS) has invited him for questioning multiple times, most recently in March 2024.
Some Nigerians argue he should be prosecuted for treason or “aiding and abetting” terrorism. They view his regular access to bandit camps as evidence of complicity.
Claim
Apart from his utterances in Nigeria, Gumi is one of the leading Islamic clergymen in the world who always frowns and criticizes the interference and actions of the United States in other sovereign countries.
After the capture of the Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, by the US military on the orders of President Donald Trump recently, some people on social media claimed that Gumi, out of fear, had deleted all the posts he made against the US.
A content creator, Noonooagu, through his Facebook page, wrote, “JUST IN: The Fe@r Of Trump
SHEIKH GUMI DELETES ALL HIS POST ABOUT AMERICA.
“Sheikh Gumi has deleted all his outing against U.S Govt, shortly after Venezuela president was capture.
People who commented on the post mocked the cleric, alleging that Gumi is in fear at the moment.
A Facebook user, Keyzo Olofua, who commented on the post, said, “The fear of Trump is the beginning of deleting.
The post had also generated thousands of reactions.
Another person on the X platform, Bia Pulse made the same claim.
To verify if this claim is true, FACTWATCH Nigeria decides to run a check on the claim.
Verification
FACTWATCH Nigeria searched and found the official Facebook page of Gumi, with over 800k followers.
Checks on the claim that he had deleted all posts he made, criticizing the US, revealed that this is not true.
For instance, on Sunday, 4 January, Gumi shared an Al Jazeera post, slamming President Trump for the US’s recent actions in Venezuela. The video by Al Jazeera shows a US senator criticizing Trump.
The same day, the cleric also shared a post from a rights activist, Medea Benjamin. Sharing the post, Gumi wrote, “They respect any law except the use of brute force.
Checking down his Facebook page, he posted on Saturday, “Venezuelans should adopt Islam. That will give them the moral rectitude to leave drugs, and the courage to repel the Devil and imperial subjugation. Islam remains the only force that is a substitute for the current world’s injustice and hypocrisy.
The interview he had with Trust TV before the end of 2025, which was posted on his Facebook page, has not been taken down.
In the interview, he criticized the US heavily and referred to its military as “terrorists”.
