Introduction

As Nigeria is gradually entering a busy political season from this August, supporters of politicians are using every tool close to them for campaigns and to draw support for their preferred candidates.

Osun State governorship election, which holds on 15 August, is the last off-cycle election before next year’s general elections.

In his second attempt to contest for the presidency, the supporters of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, are suggesting that he is the rightful choice to unseat President Bola Tinubu, who has been accused of not doing enough to solve the problems in Nigeria.

Claim

A Facebook page named Wilson MDone on Tuesday published a video showing hundreds of hijab wearing women marching in what appears to be a protest.

Claiming that the clip was a protest, the Facebook page showed that the video depicts a rally against Tinubu’s administration by attaching “Tinubu Must Go, Say No To APC, Peter Obi for president” images and captions to the video.

Some of the comments on the post indicated that some people believe the claim that the clip was from a pro-Obi rally.

 This is the reason FACTWATCH Nigeria decided to run a check on it.

Verification

The primary evidence to show that this video was NOT from any pro-Obi rally against Tinubu’s administration was that the caps worn by the Muslim women in hijab are caps which supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, are always identified with.

This Fact Checker searched and found that this video was from a solidarity rally in Osun State in support of the APC governorship candidate ahead of the poll on 15 August.

Notable television stations in Nigeria such as Arise News and many others shared the clip on their social media platforms here and here.

Lastly, in the video, there were no placards or any other activity that showed the video was from a pro-Obi rally against Tinubu’s administration.

Verdict

Therefore, this claim is MISLEADING.
