An X user, @DanielofTruth, claims(archived here) that the incumbent president of Brazil lost in a recent election in the country.

In a post on 26 October, the X user referenced the alleged loss of Brazil’s incumbent president to Nigeria’s upcoming election in 2027, adding that, like Brazil’s incumbent president,  President Bola Tinubu will not be re-elected.

The post reads, “Dem defeat incumbent President in Brazil elections, incumbent wan cancel elections🤣Nigeria is NEXT”

The post, which garnered over 50,000 views, had mixed comments, with some people believing the claim, while others refuted it as false.

Here is the truth

Many international media organisations, on Sunday, 25 October, reported that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the incumbent Brazilian president, staged a dramatic election comeback, defeating his far-right opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, to claim a historic fourth term in power.

Brazil’s incumbent President, Lula da Silva

With 100% of votes counted the 80-year-old leftist received 4.4m votes more than Bolsonaro, with a 51.79% share to his 45-year-old rival’s 48.21%. However, soon after Brazil’s electoral authority confirmed Lula’s victory, Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat and asked for the results to be annulled.

After entering politics, Lula made three unsuccessful presidential bids, in 1989, 1994 and 1998, before finally becoming Brazil’s first elected working-class president in 2002.

Lula stepped down after the maximum of two consecutive terms allowed by the constitution but returned to power after winning the 2022 election against Bolsonaro’s father, then the incumbent president Jair Bolsonaro, who was subsequently jailed for plotting a coup.

It is expected that the Brazilian incumbent president will begin his fourth term in office in January 2027.
