A Facebook page, IgbereTV, has posted an image of hunters alongside the claim that these professional hunters are in Igboland.

The post reads, “Professional Hunters in Igboland. They do their hunting in their land not carrying a gun to another man’s land”

The post which had already generated over 2k reactions on Facebook, has gotten comments from people who believed this claim is true.

This post was a result of 16 hunters traveling to Ksno, who were slain in Edo State in April.

The men were travelling in a Dangote Cement truck when they were intercepted around 1.30pm by local security guards.

After the guards searched the truck and found Dane guns, they raised the alarm, which triggered the mob attack.

The incident sparked outrage as many Nigerians queried whether these were genuine hunters.

FactWatch Nigeria decides to fact-check this claim to verify where the image came from.

Verification

When FACTWATCH Nigeria subjected the photo to Google Lens, the results showed that this image was a cutout from a 2023 YouTube documentary on hunting with Egba hunters. The Tales Of Aina Adaja Olori Ogoja Of Egba.

The YouTube video posted by Arthur Lifestyle in 2023 depicts the hunting tales of Aina Adaja Olori Ogoja of Egba.

The Egba people are a subgroup of the Yoruba people, an ethnic group of western Nigeria, a majority of whom are from the central part of Ogun State.

According to Britannica, a website that features the histories and stories, before the creation of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate, Egba territory and people is bordered by the Ketu (Benin) in the West, the Lagos Colony in south, Ijebu in the east, and Oyo, Ibadan and Isoya near Ile Ife in the north. The people are directly connected to the Ogun River, but detached from the swampy coast of Lagos. Through the Egba land, there are direct routes to other Yoruba towns, including Lagos, Ibadan, Ijebu-Ode, Ketu (Benin), and Porto Novo (Àjàṣẹ́) in the Benin Republic.

Conclusion

This image shared by IgbereTV has no connection with hunters from Nigeria’s Southeast, as findings indicate that the photo was cut out from a YouTube documentary on hunting tales of Egba people in the South West part of Nigeria.
